K800i sort-of-review
I got one, a Sony Ericsson K800i CybershotTM digital photocamera. Or in other words a 3.2 megapixel digicam with GSM functionality. Or the other way around. A camphone! OR phonecam... Whatever!
The K800i is replacing my T610, also a SonyEricsson. It's a quite a bit larger and to be honest I didn't expect it to be this big. However, the K800i is still small enough to easily fit in my pocket, so no worries there. The lens cover especially makes it look fatter then it really is. Overall the phone looks great IMO. The display is very clear and crisp, it can be used in landscape mode while browsing the web by the way.
The user interface still has the same basics as my T610 so I quickly got the hang of it again. Everything runs smoothly with no irritating waiting times. Even Java games start up quickly now. No surprise ofcourse, it's a 3.2 megapixel camera too, so there should be some CPU power in there. Applications like MP3 player and radio can be run in the background and quickly be called upon using the application button. Something that took me a while to discover (I should rtfm) was the top two buttons above the display, yes those are buttons. They act as extra buttons for settings in camera mode and for browsing your photos. I was surprised of the amount of settings that actually can be changed using the camera. Lighting, BestPicTM mode, panorama mode, stops, scenes (sports, landscapes etc.), white balance, datetime stamp, flash etc. It IS a cameraphone.
I haven't had the change to test the MP3 player yet. My free micro MemoryStick hasn't come in yet and it isn't possible to load up MP3's to its own memory using SE's software. The FM radio (with RDS, wheeee) sounds ok by the way, the reception could be better, but what else is new.
E-mail finally works on this phone, for a change. Which is great, cause the built in blogging feature is only for Blogger. But now I can e-mail my photos to Flickr, which automagically posts them to my pivot blog! For snapshots taken with the K800i so far, look for the 'moblog' tagged photos on my account. Plans are being drawn for a moblog section somewhere on this website.
Thus far I'm satisfied with my new companion, I only had for 4 days yet so... Hopefully I can ditch my iBead MP3 player later this week, when my memorystick comes in, then I'm really happy. There still is a lot more to be discovered with this phone. If any interesting pops up I'll let you know ofcourse. I also found out I need a new SIM-card, a so called USIM, to be able to enjoy the high-speed browsing with UMTS. Guess I am gonna have to pay a visit to the Primafoon this week.

After more than a month, are you still satisfied with the phone?
[ yes, I’m looking for a new phone ;) ]
Well I’m curious. If I understand the Vodafone website correctly, my phone (the K800i) will arrive in a few weeks. They only need to arrange with my old provider that I can keep my old number (just as easy). After that it’s only a question of getting rid of the simlock :-)
I have one too now :) He’s currently charging, so this weekend I will test drive mine :)
Wat het ook is; veel plezier ermee! Haha ;-)
